Your Enterprises Data Management Technology stack is only limited by your imagination! You can start with your current technology and work backwards towards your Vision & Executive Data Strategy. I will show you the 3 step process on the how, below. And boy oh boy is this going to be Monday Funday, data day!
The first thing you need to do when crafting out your MDM assessment journey to create your vision & strategy is what are the data management technologies you are working with? What maturity are you at MDM wise? What kind of processes do you have wrapped around your MDM stack? And how fresh is your Data Operating Model to show the reality of your skillset & future visions requirements? Once you answer these questions with the help of a Senior MDM Advisor, you can build out your MDM vision, enterprise data strategies, & roadmap to have the people follow, because they will be involved in crafting it...
Back to the main question, what are the details of your current Data Management stack? Is it a "mostly cloud" platform or half on-premise? What is that percentage exactly with all the software's under your tech umbrella? Once we find this key metric, we can then start calculating what the technology synergy integration options are that are available to us. Example, if you're an Informatica house with an Azure/SQL Server back end, and with that information we can get more details around those companies visions with their software platforms to match them up against our future vision and see if there are any GAPS created. Plus that bi directional partnership is a very solid one so maybe there is some great accelerator options we can leverage..
Knowing at a high level what your software's are by NAME-BRAND and what they are doing with your data is a must. We next need to understand the Enterprise Processes that use the MDM data and what their business functions are and how they are currently leveraging The MDM data for...
Example if you are not doing an enterprise match key with email then I would ask why? There are many inherently great OOTB matching attributes that have email baked in these software. That way we can tie other departments together for a new process that we can leverage if everyone is working from the same attribute & system of record on email. Which is needed for a coherent Data Excellence-Governance Model too upon a change of said golden attribute.
Finally, what type of Operating model do you have encompassing your Data Management Operations on a day to day basis? How robust this model is, reflects your future intentions on your MDM's fit for purpose solutions to increase operational efficiencies. And whom will be doing what for all the MDM tasks? This is where training is an example of a natural byproduct of the fall out from the assessment of your MDM Operating model. People are doing things the wrong way, that's okay, there could be a very good explanation as to why, but you need to ask the data stewards/engineers about the context around the decision on why it was made. If your data people's day to day understanding of why they do what they do in regards to their tasks tied to your Vision & Data Strategy is off the mark, then all future MDM vision actions will be mottled, incomplete, and missing the proverbial mark!
